Dayton, Ohio (August 21, 2006) – The Russians are coming to the
Schuster Center and the
Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra! In celebration of three season-opening concerts featuring the works of Russian composers
Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, and
Glazunov, this celebration of all things Russian begins
Thursday, September 7 and includes:
- a FREE performance of Russian music by the Dayton Philharmonic Principal String Quartet hosted by DPO Music Director Neal Gittleman at The 88 Club across from the Schuster Center (September 7), to which all are welcome
- an exhibit of Eastern-European-influenced art by Dayton-Area DVAC artists at the Dayton Racquet Club (September 14 through 16)
- a special menu featuring Russian cuisine offered by the Dayton Racquet Club to members and non-members alike. (September 14 through 16)
In the
Schuster Center, there will be:
- a timeline depicting the history of Russia created by Dr. David Darrow, Associate Professor of History from the University of Dayton (September 11 through 16)
- an exhibition of photographs of Russia taken by Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii, photographer to Tsar Nicholas the Second (September 11 through 16)
- displays of period Russian artifacts, including handmade nested dolls, enameled lacquer boxes, and lace (September 11 through 16)
- dancers performing to Russian gypsy – as well as traditional Middle-Eastern – music prior to both Classical concerts and the Classical Connections concert (September 14 through 16, beginning at 7 pm)
- dancers from the Dayton Ballet performing to Arabian Nights from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker prior to the Dayton Daily News Classical Connections concert (September 15 only, beginning at 7 pm).
The Russians ARE coming…for a celebration that is a true Russian Spectacular.

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is the largest and oldest performing arts organization in the community.
